YWIH Summer Blog: Hanna Mandl Tanzania Travels
Hey everyone! I can’t believe we’re all going to be back at school within the week, where did the summer go?
So this summer I’ve been doing a crazy mixture of things. I started off the summer at home in Toronto, working in a laboratory at a biotechnology company. It was a bit slow, but it was good to work in a research setting.
Then, for the month of June I went to Iringa, Tanzania for a program that allows students to shadow doctors and nurses in local hospitals. I was allowed to insert catheters, assist in minor procedures, receive a baby during a c-section, and draw blood. This was probably the most eye-opening experience I’ve ever had, especially after seeing the conditions that these people lived in. Oh, and of
course, one of my flights happened to stop in Zurich on the way to Tanzania, so I visited Phoebe and her family for a few days which was super fun! I cannot wait to see everyone!

YWIH Summer Blog: Captain Aurora in the Have
Hi Everyone!!
Hope everyone’s summers are going well. I can’t believe our team’s all going to be back together in about two and a half weeks–crazy! I’ve spent most of my summer trying to figure out what to write for this blog post, since I don’t think any of my activities have been blog-worthy. I’ve been working at a wealth management firm in Madison, CT called The Andriole Group since the beginning of June. It’s been a great experience and I’ve definitely learned a lot about the business. It’s also been great being here since it allows me to live and train in the Have. I’ve been living with Rainer and Abby which has been rather eventful (you should all see Rainer when she’s hungry, it’s hilarious). My summer has been full of trips to Boston for some reason. For my first 4th of July in the US, I went to Cape Cod to visit YWIH alum Erin Callahan, we had a blast with Hurricane Arthur. And then two weekends ago I played in the Beantown with most of the YWIH crew which
was a ton of fun, and a great chance to bond with the incoming freshies! And again this past weekend I went to Boston to visit my sister and some of her friends. We went to Fenway to watch the Yankees vs. Red Sox, but unfortunately the Yankees won. Earlier in the summer I saw the Yankees/Sox at Yankee Stadium, but the Red Sox won so I thought I was a good luck charm, but it turns out I’m just bad luck for the home team.
Anyways, I’ve had a great time this summer and I can’t wait for everyone to get back on campus soon!!

YWIH Summer Blog: Jamie Haddad Busy Bee
Hey Everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the summer!
This weekend I’m enjoying being home in Massachusetts, but I have actually had a pretty crazy summer so far. I’d say the craziness began the day before I drove down to Virginia… I was at home eating dinner when I noticed my dad was messing around with one of my mom’s epipens. I will spare you the theatrical story, but in the end I did end up sticking the epipen into my leg thinking it was a blank tester. It was not. That made for an especially awkward encounter when about 10 emergency responders showed up at my house to find me (a 20 year old Yale student, I swear!) sitting on the couch in a very fancy dress shirt and my dad’s underwear- don’t ask.
Anyway, shortly after that I embarked on a five-week journey to Jordan, a country in the Middle East. I spent the first week of the trip living with my dad’s family. I’ve been there a few times before so it
wasn’t that strange, but there is definitely still a language barrier between some of my relatives and I that made for a couple interesting rounds of charades.
For my remaining four weeks in Jordan I participated in an intensive language program to improve my Arabic. I stayed with a host family for that and they were incredibly strange! However, I did get to see some cool places/have fun and I spent the last two weeks observing Ramadan. Since I’m not Muslim this was a new experience for me (and one that I did not
particularly enjoy), but it was extremely fascinating to see how people in a predominantly Muslim country observe this holiday.
This week is also exciting for me because it will mark the last week of my summer internship at an investment banking company in Stamford, CT. This was my first real work experience in finance so I got to have my first insider view into the world of Wall Street, etc. However, I’m incredibly happy to be home for the weekend and can’t wait to enjoy my last few hours before I return to my summer
apartment in New Haven. If anyone wants to come visit and hang out before school starts, let me know!
