This has been a great winter break for the W. Hockey squad as we have been back since December 27th. It somewhat feels like a professional hockey player lifestyle. The players stay in the Courtyard Marriott on campus, they get meal money, and the only thing they have to focus on is training/hockey since they have no school. Many of the girls have said that they wished this was their real life. If only, women could have that amazing opportunity to play hockey for a living!
The first week back was based on preparation for the exhibition McGill game and the non-conference Providence game. It was great to get the rust off during the McGill game. Every one got to see some ice, even all three goaltenders. The next day we played Providence, and with a late power play goal in the third to tie it up, we forced the game into overtime. Unfortunately, with 16 seconds left, Providence capitalized on a lucky bounce and won the game. There was so much to take away from that game that we will bring forth with us throughout the rest of the season. We have 14 league games left, so there are many league points up for grabs!
This winter break was also a perfect time for our team to do some team building events. A couple days ago, we watched “Jack Reacher” and then bused to New Canaan CT, about 50 minutes away from Yale to practice at their outdoor rink. This is the first time we have practiced as a team in an outdoor rink. The girls loved it. After the practice, the team ran a clinic with the U10 girls program. Those young girls were so excited to work with the team. It was great giving back to the community of New Canaan, and it may just be an annual tradition.
We also had our team
holiday party, where we have a pretty aggressive gift exchange. There were some great presents up for grabs, but also some ones that you wish you never got like Popeyes chicken nuggets (gross). The hot item this year was sophomore, Lynn Kennedy’s, home made Yale lamp.
A couple days ago the team also did our annual Italian Dinner at Coach Eddie Ardito’s parents house. The girls were spoiled with homemade Lasagna, Chicken Marsala, and deserts that Coach Zumi doesn’t really approve of.
Coming up are two league games this weekend vs. St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The team has had a great week of practice and are looking forward to this weekends matchups! Then when Monday rolls around, school starts up again. Second half…here we go!!!
