Last Friday night (Dec. 2nd) was the Whiteout for Mandi. This was the first major fundraiser for the Mandi Schwartz Foundation. Our captain, senior forward, Aleca Hughes, started the charity in memory of Mandi, the Yale center who passed away in April after battling cancer (acute myeloid leukemia) for more than two years.
Yale lined up donations from other NCAA teams. The following teams have had 100 percent participation in donating toward the “White Out for Mandi“:
- Dartmouth women’s hockey
- Dartmouth women’s lacrosse
- Middlebury women’s hockey
- Northeastern women’s hockey
- Princeton women’s hockey
- St. Lawrence men’s hockey
The night began with former Bulldog Denise Soesilo ’10 addressing the crowd in a special pregame ceremony that also included a ceremonial puck drop from Giana, the 10-year-old brain tumor survivor that the team adopted at last year’s “White Out for Mandi”. The National Anthem was sung by sophomore forward Patricia McGauley, who is from the same home town (Wilcox, Sask.) and high school (Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) as Mandi. Even though the game did not go as we had wished losing to Princeton, we raised over $25,000 for Mandi’s foundation!
Thank you for every one who supported this event, it was a huge success!
